Choir & General Music
CHOIR: Students in choir will learn to use their vocal instrument both alone and with others. We will work on developing the skills necessary for singing many different styles of choral literature appropriately arranged for middle school voices. In addition to learning proper vocal production and technique, students will also learn music reading skills, sight-singing skills, and performance skills. We will grow in our understanding of musical elements (rhythm, melody, form, harmony, dynamics, expressive elements, tone color/timbre, articulation and style) and how to apply them to the music we are performing. Choir also offers opportunities for students to develop team building and leadership skills. This is a performance-based class. Participation in concert performances outside of regular class hours is required. (May be taken in all grade levels.)
GENERAL MUSIC (required if not taking a music performance course): Required for students who do not take band, orchestra, or choir: Sixth grade general music is a non-performance based course. This course consists of a number of mini units. Each unit has at least one of the following incorporated into it: singing, composition, listening, group projects or instrumental playing. Composers and performers are explored along with musical form, instruments, theatre, music history and style.
